Increase Planet Zoo 2 Sustainability by adding recycling bins and replacing standard power generators with wind turbines or solar panels. Use the facilities available in your zoo and make replacements as your budget allows. Check the Sustainability category in Zoo Management > Overview to judge the result.
Frontier's official Zoo Management guide identifies two inputs: the number of sustainable power sources and the number of recycling bins. It does not give a fixed item count for each star, a required generator ratio or a guaranteed five-star layout.
Raise the rating from Zoo Management
- Check the starting score. Open the Zoo Management tab, select Overview and find Sustainability among the Zoo Reputation categories. Note this category's rating before spending money.
- Add recycling bins around the zoo. Choose recycling bins specifically. Donation bins have a separate purpose: they collect money from guests who have viewed animals.
- Replace standard generators where affordable. Wind turbines and solar panels are the sustainable alternatives named in the official guide. Review your existing power setup as you make replacements, using the Utilities heatmap to help inspect it.
- Return to the same rating. Compare Sustainability in Overview after your changes. Management > Overview > Graph also lets you review trends in your ratings. Continue making affordable improvements and checking their effect.

Check the Sustainability category separately from the overall Zoo Reputation rating.
If wind turbines or solar panels are not available in your current zoo, this guide does not establish a universal unlock tier for them. Follow the requirements shown in your game rather than buying unrelated facilities in the hope of unlocking a Sustainability bonus.
Check recycling when renewable power is already present
Having wind turbines or solar panels does not address the other listed input: recycling bins. If your zoo already uses sustainable power but the rating remains low, inspect the bins you have placed before replacing more generators.
The item type matters to this check. The official guidance names recycling bins, rather than bins in general. More donation bins may help your finances, but they are not listed as a direct Sustainability input.
Keep the power network working during changes
Check your utilities while replacing power facilities so that improving infrastructure does not distract from running the zoo. You can inspect a facility's condition in its Info Panel or under Management > Facilities > Utilities.
Frontier's maintenance guidance says Mechanics maintain and repair facilities. If a facility needs attention, its Info Panel includes Call Mechanic. These checks help you maintain working facilities; the published Sustainability instructions do not specify an extra star bonus for maintenance or repair.
If the rating still appears unchanged, keep a record of the Sustainability score and the facilities you added or replaced before making further purchases. The official guide provides no confirmed recalculation interval or exact threshold that would justify a timed fix or a fixed shopping list.
Sustainability is one part of Zoo Reputation
Zoo Reputation contains four categories. Match the low category to its own inputs instead of treating every improvement as a Sustainability upgrade.
| Category | Factors identified by the official guide |
|---|---|
| Sustainability | Number of sustainable power sources and recycling bins |
| Animal Husbandry | Average animal welfare and having some animals in the Thriving state |
| Guest Education | Education of the most educated guests and coverage of relevant animal topics |
| Guest Experience | Guest happiness, scenery and a diverse collection of appealing species |
For example, better animal welfare can help Animal Husbandry, while education boards and speakers belong to the Guest Education task. Those actions are not listed as direct Sustainability inputs. Improving this category alone also does not demonstrate that every requirement for a higher overall Zoo Reputation has been met.
Releasing animals and completing Conservation Projects serve other conservation goals. The official guide explains that releasing animals can earn Conservation Credits, and that projects can reward credits, animals or release groups. It does not list releases or Conservation Credit balances as direct inputs for the zoo's Sustainability rating. If this specific category is holding you back, check recycling and power infrastructure before investing in a separate conservation project.
